$30 Million Restoration to Transform Historic 16th Street Church into a Hub for Worship and Community Renewal
A century-old landmark will be renewed as a center for faith, family, and community services – uniting two congregations and preserving a DC treasure
Washington, DC (October 12, 2025) – In a landmark $30 million restoration project, The District Church and National Baptist Memorial Church are uniting to restore one of Washington, DC’s most historic churches at 1501 Columbia Road NW. The project, called RESTORE, will transform the century-old building into a vibrant center for worship, outreach, childcare, and community events—serving families and neighborhoods across the District.
“At a time when many feel divided and discouraged, God is writing a new chapter of unity and renewal through the church. We believe this building will stand as a sign of hope for our city— that God is at work here in Washington, DC,” said Dr. Aaron Graham, Lead Pastor of The District Church.
Dr. Lisa Banks-Williams, Pastor of National Baptist Memorial Church, added: “For more than 100 years, this building has been a place where the love of Christ has been proclaimed. We are excited that through this partnership, it will continue to shine as a light in the city—meeting both the spiritual and practical needs of our community for generations to come.”
The building’s story began in 1907 with the founding of National Baptist Memorial Church. Constructed in three phases – the Sunday School building (1910), the Memorial Sanctuary (1926), and the Educational Wing (1941) – it grew into a beacon of faith in the nation’s capital. Edwin Davis built the Memorial Sanctuary in the 1920s; now a century later, his great-grandson, Jim Davis, CEO of James G. Davis Construction Corporation (DAVIS), will oversee the restoration as general contractor.
Plans for the renewed space include upgraded worship and event spaces, expanded childcare facilities, and new outreach programs for children, families, and those in need across the city. DCS Design, led by Doug Carter, is serving as architect, and Ministry Solutions Group, led by Nathan Artt, is the project management group.
Jim Davis said: “At DAVIS, we’re honored to help restore this historic space and support the continued legacy of The District Church. I have had the privilege of knowing Pastor Aaron Graham for over a decade, and I’ve seen firsthand the meaningful work of the church. The congregation’s commitment to sharing the love of Jesus and serving our city has touched countless lives. Establishing a permanent home for the church is a significant milestone for both the congregation and the broader community. ”
The District Church has already secured $5 million and is launching its RESTORE initiative this week to raise millions more. To close the remaining funding gap, donors, financial institutions, and community partners are invited to join in this historic opportunity to restore one of Washington’s most significant sacred spaces.
